This route up Carrauntoohil, Ireland's highest peak, is our first Advanced Hike of the semester. We will be ascending to the summit of Carrauntoohil (1041m) through the treacherous Brother O'Shea's Gully, and down the aptly named "Heavenly Gates". The path contains a lot of steep uphill with a taste of scrambling (using your hands to get over or around rocks/boulders). You will need a good head for heights to undertake this hike. We recommend that you only apply if you've been comfortable on all previous hikes that you have attended (you must have attended at least one Intermediate Hike). Distance: 12km, elevation gain: 850m. 

As always, hiking boots with ankle support are mandatory.

The Essentials

If you cannot attend the hike you will have to give notice by 6pm on Friday in order to receive a refund.

If you have any pertinent medical issues please send us an email so we can accommodate this.

The bus is leaving the Western Gateway Building at 8am sharp, so make sure to get there around 15 minutes beforehand.

Remember to bring:

• Student card
• Rain Jacket
• Rain pants if you have them
• Lots of warm layers - it will be much colder at the summit than when we're setting off
• Thick socks
• Hiking Boots with ankle support - you will not be allowed on the bus without them!
• Packed lunch and water
• Warm gloves and hat
• Spare change of clothes and shoes for after – You will be wet and muddy by the end of the hike. Put them in a separate bag. You can leave it on the bus during the hike.
• No jeans allowed. No exceptions. You will not be allowed on the bus if you arrive wearing jeans.
• No Shorts!
